Since 2006, the Hutto Community has come together every year in a day of service to pick up litter and help beautify the city.  Now entering its 13th year, the Great Hutto Cleanup (previously known as Hutto’s Big Event) is one of the largest one-day, community volunteer events in the city. This year, the event will take place on Saturday, April 7th, 2018 at the Hutto High School Visitors Parking Lot.

Under the umbrella of the Keep Hutto Beautiful Foundation, Great Hutto Cleanup offers a free Junk Round Up for all citizens within the Hutto ISD boundary. Items accepted include electronics, metal, brush, furniture, tires, batteries, oil, paint, and antifreeze. In 2018, the Junk Round Up will also offer free, secure document shredding onsite. The event also features a litter cleanup through Hutto’s public areas and holds the Golden Hippo Traveling Trophy contest between the neighborhoods.

GOLDEN HIPPO TRAVELING TROPHY

Neighborhoods participate as a group to clean up their individual communities by picking up litter, beautification efforts, etc. the day of the event. The Golden Hippo is awarded to the neighborhood who has the most volunteers who participate in the cleanup. The trophy is displayed at the winning neighborhood entrance for one year. At the end of the year it will either travel to a new winning neighborhood OR stay put if the neighborhood wins again.

The Great Hutto Cleanup is part of the Don’t Mess With Texas Trash-Off and Great American Cleanup initiatives.  The Don't Mess With Texas Trash-Off is part of the partnership between Keep Texas Beautiful and the Texas Department of Transportation. The Don't Mess With Texas Trash-Off serves as Texas’ signature event for the Great American Cleanup, the nation's largest community improvement program, held annually from March 1 through May 31.

Previous Year's Stats:

The 2017 event (held April 8th) had 229 volunteers come out for the day of service. 880 pounds of litter were picked up in the parks and neighborhoods. The junk round up collected 20,200 pounds of solid waste, 2.82 tons of metal, and 80 cubic yards of brush.

The 2017 winner of the Golden Hippo Traveling Trophy was Hutto Parke Neighborhood!

The 2017 event could not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors. Special thanks to: Al Clawson Disposal Inc, City of Hutto, Waste Management, Hutto ISD, Hutto Rotary Club, R Bank, Hutto Lions Club, Whataburger, Tex Mix, Hutto Realty, Kanga Roof, Baked N Sconed, Beau’s Specialty Meats and Deli, Lowe’s, Home Depot, Keep Hutto Beautiful Foundation, Hutto Chamber of Commerce, and Keep Texas Beautiful.

History of Hutto's Annual Trash Off

The first official Don't Mess With Texas Trash Off was held in Hutto, Texas in 2006. The event was overseen by the City of Hutto Parks and Recreation Department.

Up through 2014, the Annual Trash Off and the Annual Junk Round Up were held as separate events -- both organized by the City of Hutto Parks and Recreation Department and the Keep Hutto Beautiful Commission.

Thanks to the Hutto Chamber of Commerce Leadership Hutto Class of 2014, the two annual events were combined into one day of cleanup and beautification. The event was known as Hutto's Big Event from 2015-2017.

Just as the Hutto Community is growing, this annual event has grown as well! The Keep Hutto Beautiful Foundation officially took over the organization and administration duties in July 2017. With more people moving to the area and more people volunteering each year, they and the Planning Committee felt a name change would help the people in Hutto understand what the annual trash off and junk round up is all about. The community became part of the process with a RENAME THE EVENT contest! 36 submissions later, the Planning Committee determined that the new name of the annual event would be GREAT HUTTO CLEANUP!
