LONG-TIME CLEAN UP EVENT GETS NEW NAME AND NEW LEADERSHIP

Hutto, TX, August 31, 2017– After 12 years, the Annual Trash Off and Junk Round Up will be rebranded as the Great Hutto Cleanup and be administered by the Keep Hutto Beautiful Foundation.

Since 2006, the Hutto community has come together every year in a day of service to pick up litter and help beautify the city as part of statewide initiative, the Don’t Mess With Texas Trash Off.  During this signature event, volunteers clean up litter and debris from city parks and neighborhoods. From 2006 – 2014, the Hutto event was simply known as the Don’t Mess With Texas Trash Off. In 2015 the event name was changed to Hutto’s Big Event to encompass the addition of the Junk Round Up portion (which had previously been a separate event).

After overseeing this annual event for the last twelve years, the City of Hutto is handing the baton over to Keep Hutto Beautiful Foundation.  The Foundation will be taking over the organization and administration duties of the event and utilizing a planning committee comprised of a collective of individuals from the community. The fundraising component, which was previously managed by Hutto Has Heart, will now be under the Keep Hutto Beautiful Foundation as well.

A change in event leadership also provided an opportunity to rebrand the event. With more people moving to the area and more people volunteering each year, Keep Hutto Beautiful felt a name change would help the people in Hutto better understand what the annual trash off and junk round up is all about. Wanting the community to be part of the process, a renaming contest was launched in July. The winning name submission was decided by the event’s planning committee. Local resident, Travis Allen won the contest with the name ‘Great Hutto Cleanup’ and was awarded a gift certificate to Hutto Feed and Landscape Supplies.

The City of Hutto is still very committed to being involved with the annual event and has awarded the Keep Hutto Beautiful Foundation $3,634.00 in Outside Agency Funds to be used in 2018.

The next Great Hutto Cleanup will be held on April 7, 2018. The event brings hundreds of community volunteers together in order to clean and beautify Hutto, Texas through a Trash Off, Junk Round Up, and the Golden Hippo Traveling Trophy Contest.

The Don't Mess With Texas Trash-Off is part of the partnership between Keep Texas Beautiful and the Texas Department of Transportation. The Don't Mess With Texas Trash-Off serves as Texas’ signature event for the Great American Cleanup, the nation's largest community improvement program, held annually from March 1 through May 31.

Keep Hutto Beautiful Foundation’s mission is to inspire the community to be environmentally engaged by providing education, resources, green initiatives and beautification opportunities. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and is one of 398 Keep Texas Beautiful affiliates in the State.
